UL 94 V-2 Vertical Burn Flammability

What is the UL 94 V-2 Standard?
The UL 94 V-2 classification is part of Underwriters Laboratories’ safety standard for the flammability of plastic materials used in devices and appliances. This vertical burn test measures how materials respond to direct flame exposure, focusing specifically on their ability to self-extinguish and control dripping of flaming particles. For a material to achieve the V-2 rating, it must self-extinguish within 30 seconds after two separate flame applications, with the total flaming time not exceeding 250 seconds for a set of 5 specimens. While V-2 rated materials may drip flaming particles, these droplets must not ignite cotton placed beneath the test apparatus, making this standard critical for applications where fire containment is essential but dripping is acceptable.
Halco’s commitment to flammability performance
Halco’s flame retardant hook and loop products, including our FR Nylon series and Type 9 FR PSA adhesive-backed fasteners, are designed and manufactured to meet the UL 94 V-2 standard. These products are rigorously tested to ensure they self-extinguish within the required timeframe and maintain their structural integrity during flame exposure. Our FR product line is particularly valuable in aerospace applications, firefighter workwear, data centers and other applications where fire safety compliance is mandatory. Each batch undergoes quality testing to verify continued compliance with UL 94 V-2 requirements.
Beyond basic compliance, Halco’s FR products maintain their full functionality and performance characteristics while meeting these stringent flammability standards. This means you don’t have to compromise on fastening strength, cycle life, or other critical fastening requirements when choosing our flame-retardant solutions. Flammability resistance is particularly important in the transportation industry and so Halco offers solutions certified to additional fire safety transportation standards:
- FAR 25.853(a): Both 12-second and 60-second vertical burn tests required for aerospace applications
- FMVSS-302: Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard for flammability of interior materials
These certifications make our products suitable for applications in aerospace, transportation, and other environments where stringent flame resistance is mandatory. Our technical team can help you select the appropriate flame-retardant fastening solution for your specific industry requirements and performance needs.s where both flame resistance and smoke emission control are mandatory.
