Halco is adding a new Cevenini E450 L automatic lathe slitter to our Hayward, California facility—and it’s another step in our ongoing commitment to delivering exactly the right material, in exactly the right form, for your application.
What Is Lathe Slitting?
Lathe slitting is a precision converting process that cuts master rolls of material down to narrower, custom-width rolls. The log of material is loaded onto a mandrel and rotated while a driven circular blade makes a clean, controlled cut through the material. Unlike knife slitting, which uses stationary blades pressed against a moving web, lathe slitting excels at handling thicker, denser, or more rigid materials—making it ideal for the types of products we work with every day.
At Halco, our lathe slitting capabilities extend across a wide range of materials, including pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes, foam tapes, wide loop materials, hook and loop backing materials, and various films and substrates used in closure and attachment systems.
Why Custom Widths Matter
Most manufacturers don’t use hook and loop or bonding tapes in standard widths off a catalog page. Their products require specific dimensions to match assembly fixtures, fit within tight design envelopes, or meet exacting production tolerances. Getting material in the exact width you need—rather than trimming it yourself on the factory floor—saves time, reduces waste, and delivers a cleaner, more consistent result.
Custom-width adhesive tapes are especially important. Whether it’s a narrow strip of bonding tape for LED mounting, a wide roll of adhesive-backed loop for panel attachment, or a precise-width PSA tape for automated dispensing, the width of the material directly affects how it performs in your process and your product. Too wide, and you’re wasting material and adding weight. Too narrow, and you may compromise bond area and performance. Getting it right from the start is what we do.
What the Cevenini E450 L Brings to Our Facility
The E450 L is a fully automatic lathe slitter with a 67-inch (1700mm) working width and indexing tolerance of ±0.1mm (0.003 inches). It handles log diameters up to 430mm on mandrels ranging from 1 inch to 3 inches in diameter, with minimum cut widths starting at just 2mm and increasing in decimal increments.
The machine is controlled by a Siemens PLC with a touchscreen interface, enabling precise programming of cutting widths, blade speeds, and penetration rates. An automatic blade sharpening system with deburring keeps cuts clean and consistent across long production runs. It also supports cutting multiple widths from a single log, which means we can fulfill varied width requirements from the same master roll efficiently.
Part of A Bigger Picture
This new slitter complements Halco’s full converting and die-cutting operation. Combined with our knife slitting, strip cutting, kiss-cutting, custom adhesive lamination, and die-cutting capabilities, it gives us even greater flexibility to convert raw materials into application-ready components. From narrow adhesive tape strips to wide rolls of hook and loop, we can deliver precisely what your production process demands.
If you have a project that calls for custom-width adhesive tapes, hook and loop, foam, or other converting materials, let’s talk. We’ll evaluate your application and get you exactly what you need.
