Hook and Loop Formats built to improve Sewing productivity

Contract sewers and sewn product manufacturers don’t simply buy hook and loop by the yard. They buy a width, a color, and a format that is designed specifically to meet their production sewing need for productivity. What changes throughput is not the fastener. It is how the fastener arrives at the machine.

Halco converts sew-on hook and loop to the formats production floors run: long-length rolls that reduce roll changeovers, precision slitting that holds width through a folder, cut-to-length kits that take measuring off the operator’s bench, and tack-down lamination that keeps adhesive out of the needle path. Most sewing customers run the same specification continuously, so we set that up as a stocking arrangement — agreed material, agreed format, held against your release schedule.

Halco does not sew finished goods. We supply the material to the people who do.

Large long-length roll of black sew-on hook and loop material for continuous production runs.
Spool Wound Roll

Longer rolls, fewer change-outs

Standard put-ups are 27.5 and 50 yards. Halco converts many sew-on products to substantially longer rolls — up to 1,100 yards on several products, roughly forty times a standard roll.

Long-length rolls are not a catalog item. They are set up with a sales rep as a stocking arrangement, with a dedicated stock number and an agreed release schedule, because the roll is converted and held to your specification rather than pulled from general inventory. For any operation running the same width and color continuously, that setup is the single largest available reduction in change-outs.

Splice count is the other half of it. A splice is a joint within a roll, and every one is an unplanned stop — the operator clears it, cuts it out, and restarts. Splice counts are not standardized across the industry, which is why a long roll from one supplier runs and the same length from another does not. Specify splice expectations alongside width, color, and length, and ask that splices be sealed with no loose edges and the piece count marked on the roll so it is knowable at the dock rather than at the machine.

Precision slitting and edge finish

Woven hook and loop carries a selvedge — a finished edge that does not ravel and gives the stitch line a clean margin. Knife slitting produces any width within a product’s range, and Halco can supply slit material with a selvedge edge or without, depending on what your process needs.

Width consistency matters more to a sewing line than the number itself. Tape that varies in width wanders in a folder or guide, and a machine set for a nominal width drifts when the actual width moves.

Feature Selvedge edge Slit edge
How it’s produced Finished edge of the woven tape Knife slit to width
Ravel resistance Self-finished, does not ravel Edge processing available where the edge is exposed
Stitch margin Clean margin for the needle Stitch line runs closer to the cut
Widths Standard woven widths Any width within the product’s range
Specify it when The edge is handled, laundered, or visible The width matters more than the edge, or the edge is captured in a seam

Edge conditions are specified by the customer, not just accepted. If the closure gets washed, gets handled, or shows on the finished product, ask for selvedge or a processed slit edge. Where the edge is captured in a seam, it doesn’t matter. What causes trouble is cutting tape down at the bench, which leaves a raw edge that will open up.

Close-up of black sew-on hook and loop tape with a central tack-down adhesive strip for accurate positioning during sewing.

Tack-down Adhesive for easier positioning

Hook and loop is a narrow fabric, and at production speed it wanders under the presser foot. Misplaced tape means picking out stitches and sewing the part again.

Tack-down lamination is the standard answer: a narrow strip of adhesive down the center of the tape’s back holds it in position while both stitch lines run through clear channels along either edge.

Strip width is the whole design. Too narrow and the tape lifts. Too wide and the stitch line runs into adhesive, which transfers to the needle, degrades stitch formation, and eventually reaches the bobbin case. Halco sizes the strip to the tape width and the stitch margin.

Tack-down is a converting option, not a separate product — available on any sew-in material in the line including FR, and combined with slitting, cut-to-length, and die-cutting in the same order. Specify the base material, the tape width, and whether you need it on hook, loop, or both.

Cut-to-length, mated sets, and kits

Measuring and cutting at the machine is handling time, not sewing time. Halco cuts to length and supplies pieces loose, in mated hook and loop pairs, or grouped into kits by assembly.

  • Cut-to-length pieces — cut to exact dimensions, labeled and boxed to your specification
  • Mated sets — hook and loop supplied as matched pairs, sized per part
  • Kits — all components for one assembly grouped together, so the operator is not sourcing hook from one bin and loop from another
  • Die-cut shapes — any profile, in nylon, polyester, FR, or knit loop

Most often specified by operations running a repeating part — a strap, a flap, a cover closure.

Choosing the right construction

Choose the right hook and loop construction based on the most important design consideration — closure strength, finished thickness, sun exposure, wash cycles, or cost. Specifying more strength than the closure needs rarely helps, and an aggressive hook against a soft loop will shorten the life of a closure rather than extend it.

If the closure… Specify Why
Carries load in shear Woven nylon hook and loop 22.7 lb/in² shear against 13.1 lb/in² for knit with the same hook
Is stitched close to the tape edge Woven 4.4 lbs stitch tear strength against 2.4 lbs for knit
Opens daily over a multi-year life Premium hook with woven loop 15% closure strength loss at 2,000 peels against 30% for standard
Needs minimum finished thickness Knit nylon loop 0.04″ against 0.077″–0.082″ for woven
Needs wide-format coverage Knit nylon loop Available to 54″; woven runs to 7″
Lives outdoors in sun or salt Woven polyester UV and saltwater resistance where nylon degrades
Is on a low-cost or short-life product Woven Nylon/Poly Economy grade at 9.3 lb/in² shear — sufficient where the closure does not need to outlive the goods
Touches skin, or uses elastic loop Soft woven hook or low-profile molded hook Standard hook shortens cycle life against soft and elastic constructions
Must meet a flammability standard FR woven nylon FAR 25.853, FMVSS 302, NFPA, UL, CAL TB

The HALCO® Hook and Loop Performance Guide publishes peel, shear, and closure strength reduction at 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000 cycles for every hook and loop combination in the line.

Applications

Automotive Insulation for NVH

Sewn insulation and acoustic packages behind trim panels, in hoodliners, and on removable covers consume hook and loop in high volume. Closures run long, parts repeat by the thousand, and color rarely shows — which makes this the application where roll length and splice count matter most.

Industrial Equipment and Machine Covers

Equipment covers, machine guards, weather covers, tool rolls, and reusable soft packaging. Closures are long and wide, and covers that live outdoors are specified in polyester for UV and moisture resistance. Hook and loop lets a cover come off for service and go back on without hardware.

Tactical gear and soft-sided cases

Pouches, packs, first aid kits, belts, holsters, and MOLLE-compatible gear, plus the loop fields sewn to their exteriors. Mil-Spec A-A-55126 conformance is a common requirement. See Military and Law Enforcement.

Gym, yoga, and athletic floor mats

Mat edge banding and corner fastening, where mats join edge to edge across a floor and come apart for cleaning and storage. Soft hook paired with unnapped or knit loop keeps the closure comfortable underfoot, and color is matched to the mat rather than left black.

Heavy equipment hose and line management

Straps securing hydraulic hoses, harnesses, and line runs on combines, tractors, and construction equipment. These closures carry real load, get opened for service access, and live outdoors under UV, vibration, and washdown — so they are specified on shear strength and cycle life rather than cost, and often in polyester where sun exposure is constant.

Medical and orthopedic straps

Braces, supports, collars, and patient positioning products — the largest sewn hook and loop segment by part count. Elastic loop, C-fold and Z-fold constructions, and soft hook are specified for skin-adjacent products. See Innovative Loop Constructions for Medical Device Straps.

Frequently asked questions

Does Halco provide sewing services?

No. Halco supplies hook and loop materials to contract sewers and sewn product manufacturers. We do not sew finished goods. For sewing capacity, the Advanced Textiles Association maintains a contract sewer directory.

What hook and loop formats are available for contract sewing operations?

Precision-slit roll stock in any width within a product’s range; standard 27.5 yd and 50 yd rolls; long-length rolls converted and stocked under an arrangement with a sales rep; cut-to-length pieces supplied loose or in mated sets; kits grouped per assembly; die-cut shapes; tack-down lamination; and dye-to-match color. Most sewing customers run a repeating specification, so these are set up as a stocking program rather than quoted job by job.

How can I reduce sewing changeover time when working with hook and loop?

Buy longer rolls with fewer splices. Standard put-ups are 27.5 and 50 yards; Halco converts many sew-on products to substantially longer rolls, up to 1,100 yards on several products. A line consuming 1,100 yards of tape handles one roll instead of forty, and every change-out costs the operator’s time plus the tail left on the core. Long-length rolls are set up with a sales rep as a stocking arrangement with a dedicated stock number.

What adhesive can I use to position hook and loop before sewing without gumming needles?

Specify tack-down lamination — a narrow adhesive strip laminated down the center of the tape’s back, leaving a clear sewing channel along each edge. The tape holds position at speed and the needle never contacts adhesive. This is a converting option applied to any sew-in product in the line, not a separate product.

How do I keep adhesive from gumming up sewing needles?

Keep the adhesive out of the needle path. Full-width adhesive-backed hook and loop places adhesive exactly where the needle penetrates, which transfers adhesive to the needle, changes stitch formation, and eventually reaches the bobbin case and hook. Tack-down lamination places the adhesive in a narrow center strip and leaves both stitch lines clear.

What hook and loop materials work best for high-speed industrial sewing?

Woven nylon in long-length rolls, specified with tack-down lamination where the tape needs to hold position at speed. Woven construction gives the stitch line a dimensionally consistent tape with a selvedge margin and 4.4 lbs stitch tear strength.

How do I keep hook and loop from fraying at the edges?

Woven hook and loop carries a selvedge — a finished edge that does not ravel. Used at a standard woven width, fraying is not a failure mode. It becomes a consideration on slit widths, where the knife cuts through the weave. Halco slits to any width within a product’s range and can supply the material with a selvedge edge or without, and applies edge processing where the application exposes the edge. Specify the edge condition along with the width rather than cutting tape down at the bench, which leaves a raw edge that will open up.

What edge finish do sewn hook and loop products need?

A closure edge that will be handled, abraded, or laundered should be either a selvedge or a processed slit edge — repeated wash and dry cycles will open an unprocessed edge. An edge captured inside a seam or binding needs nothing. On die-cut and adhesive-backed parts, the adhesive and liner stabilize the perimeter and an unprocessed edge is standard.

What is the difference between selvedge and cut edge hook and loop?

A selvedge is the finished, self-contained edge of woven tape — it does not ravel and gives the needle a clean margin. A slit edge is produced by knife slitting to width, which cuts through the weave. Slitting is what makes non-standard widths possible, and Halco can supply slit material with a selvedge edge or without, with edge processing where the application exposes the edge.

What is the difference between woven and knit hook and loop for sewing?

Woven is formed on a loom with a finished selvedge; knit is knitted and thinner. Halco’s woven nylon runs 0.077″ hook and 0.082″ loop, engaging at 0.131″. Knit nylon loop is 0.04″. Woven holds engagement strength longer under cycling and has nearly double the stitch tear strength — 4.4 lbs against 2.4 lbs. Knit is the better choice where finished thickness, drape, or wide-format coverage governs.

What hook and loop holds up best in high-cycle sewn applications?

HALCO® Premium Sew On Hook. It loses 15% of closure strength at 2,000 peels and 25% at 5,000, where standard nylon loses 30% and 35%, and it delivers 2.59 lb/in peel against 1.12 lb/in. The pairing matters as much as the hook — premium hook is characterized against Halco woven nylon loop. Polyester is the exception to watch: right for UV and salt, but the shortest cycle life in the woven family.

How do I prevent loop blow-out and hook abrasion in sewn products?

Both trace to a pairing mismatch rather than the sewing operation. Loop blow-out — loop fibers pulling free under repeated peel — happens sooner on knit and unnapped loops, which carry less fiber anchorage than woven. Hook abrasion comes from over-specifying hook against a soft loop. Match hook aggressiveness to loop construction rather than maximizing both; where high cycle counts are required, move to woven loop before moving to a more aggressive hook; and size the engagement area for the load.

Does hook and loop shrink when washed?

Woven nylon and polyester are dimensionally stable through normal laundering but not shrink-free. A-A-55126 caps length-direction shrinkage at 3.0% for hook tape and 4.0% for loop tape tested to AATCC 135. Two implications: hook and loop do not shrink identically, and the tape and the fabric shrink at different rates, which can pucker a closure after the first wash. Run a wash test on the actual fabric and tape combination before committing a production build.

Can I mix hook and loop from different manufacturers?

Engagement values published by any manufacturer are measured on matched pairs. Mixing hook from one source with loop from another produces unpredictable peel and shear, and the published performance data no longer applies. See Hook and Loop Compatibility and Matched Pairs.

Can I get hook and loop dyed to match my fabric?

Yes. Halco offers dye-to-match Pantone color matching with lower minimums than most suppliers, across the woven range. Send a fabric swatch or a Pantone reference.

What is the widest hook and loop available for sewn products?

HALCO® Knit Nylon Loop is available to 54″. Woven products run to 7″.

When should a manufacturer switch from sewing to welding hook and loop?

Welding removes thread, needles, and operator time from the attachment step entirely, and is worth evaluating at higher volumes or where sewing labor is the constraint. Note that not every sew-on material is weldable — ultrasonic welding is not recommended for HALCO® Woven Nylon/Poly. See Hook and Loop Welding.

Is Halco hook and loop Prop 65 compliant?

Most Halco sew-on products are Prop 65, REACH, and RoHS compliant. Speak to a representative for certifications on a specific product.
