Seat Trim and Upholstery

OEM seat makers attach trim covers to foam with mushroom hook, molded or glued into foam channels, and loose loop sewn into the cover seams. Aftermarket seat covers and upholstery use sewn woven hook and loop. Halco converts these materials to be production-ready, packaged in the format and quantity your line runs, and changes them quickly when your needs change.

The first three products work together to attach OEM seat trim to foam; the woven hook and loop products serve seat cover makers and upholsterers. Halco’s knit loop material is used to produce graphically styled branded patches for seat back covers.

Hook and Loop Selection by Seat Application

The right hook and loop depends on where it attaches: OEM seats pair mushroom hook in the foam with loose loop in the trim, while seat covers and upholstery use sewn woven hook and loop. The table below matches each seat application to its hook, its loop and the HALCO® products used.

Seat application Hook side Loop side HALCO® products

Shielded or gasket sidewall: two ways to keep foam out of mold-in hook

During the foam pour, liquid foam must stay out of the hooks or the trim won’t engage. Mold-in hook solves this in one of two ways. Seat makers specify the part size and the configuration; Halco builds to it.

Comparison Shielded Gasket sidewall
What protects the hooks during the pour A paper or loop cover over the hook face Foam gaskets along both edges
Step at trim assembly Peel off the cover None
Labor at the line More Less
Part cost Lower Higher
Backing Thin scrim loop or foam Thin scrim loop or foam

Notched mushroom hook follows tight curves

Foam channels rarely run straight. Halco die-cuts notches or triangles along mushroom hook strips so they bend around radii without buckling. Notch spacing is set by the curve: when one OEM engineer needed a sharper radius, Halco tightened the spacing to fit. The same strips are cut from stocked 54-inch fabric to any width the channel needs.

Hook and Loop Formats for Seat Assembly and seat cover Production

cross wound spool

Halco converts hook and loop into the format each seat line or sewing room runs, so parts go straight into production without extra cutting or handling.

Format Typical seat use
Slit to custom widths from 54-inch mushroom fabric Glued foam-channel hook on OEM seats
Die-cut shapes and notched strips Curved foam channels, mold-in parts
Crosswound spools Loose loop and woven tape for sewing lines; fewer changeovers
Cut to length Seat covers, trim tie-downs
Stacked bundles of cut pieces Second- and third-row bench seat covers, often about 48-inch pieces
Tack-down lamination Holds hook and loop in place on the cover while it is sewn
Heat imprinting on loop Logos and decorative patches
Dye-to-match, on request Matching trim colors such as beige

HAlco standard Materials meet FMVSS 302

FMVSS 302 is the federal flammability test for vehicle interior materials, including seat cushions, seat backs and head restraints. It is a material test: the vehicle maker certifies the vehicle. Halco’s standard seat trim materials meet it, so flame-retardant product is rarely needed for automotive seating. Halco seat trim products have also been tested to OEM peel and shear specifications for GM and Stellantis.

Seat flammability requirements by market

Market Requirement What it means for hook and loop
Cars, light and heavy trucks, buses (US) FMVSS 302: horizontal burn rate of 102 mm (4 in) per minute or less Sewn fasteners are tested on their own; materials bonded at every point are tested with their substrate
School buses (US) FMVSS 302, plus state seat-assembly fire tests in some states The fastener is judged inside the finished seat; replacement covers must keep it passing
Transit buses (US) FMVSS 302, plus the FTA’s recommended fire safety practices, which agencies often write into specs FR hook and loop is available where a transit spec calls for it
Passenger rail (US) 49 CFR 238, Appendix B (FRA) for intercity and commuter rail; transit rail specs often cite NFPA 130. Export programs may require EN 45545-2. Seat materials are tested for flammability and smoke, or the complete seat is tested as an assembly. Small fasteners and clips under 16 in² (100 cm²) each can be exempt when covered by a fire hazard analysis.
Motorhomes and specialty vehicles FMVSS 302 Same as cars and trucks
Marine, ATV and off-road Set by the builder’s material spec; off-road specs often cite SAE J369 or ISO 3795 Ask for the OEM spec; Halco supplies test data to support it
Aircraft (see our Aerospace page) FAR 25.853 (FAA); seat cushions must also pass a separate oil-burner fire test Requires flame-retardant hook and loop; see the Aerospace page for products

Frequently Asked Questions

What hook and loop is used in automotive seat manufacturing?

OEM seats use mushroom hook on the foam and loose loop sewn into the trim cover seams. The mushroom hook is either molded into the foam during the pour (mold-in hook) or glued into channels after molding. Woven hook is used under the seat to tie down stretched cover edges. Aftermarket seat covers use sewn woven hook and loop, usually black nylon.

How are seat trim covers attached to the foam?

Most OEM seats press loose loop, sewn into the cover’s seams, onto mushroom hook in the foam’s channels. Hook and loop attaches the cover without hog rings or adhesive at those points, and the cover can be removed for service. Some seats combine hook and loop with hog rings or plastic clips in other areas.

What is the difference between shielded and gasket sidewall mold-in hook?

Both keep liquid foam out of the hooks during molding. Shielded hook carries a paper or loop cover that is peeled off at trim assembly. Gasket sidewall hook has foam gaskets along its edges, so there is nothing to remove; it costs more to make but saves labor on the line.

How does mushroom hook follow curved foam channels?

Halco die-cuts notches or triangles along the strip so it bends around radii without buckling. Tighter curves need closer notch spacing, which Halco sets to the part.

What do the stripes on loose loop mean?

Guide stripes, single or double and in various colors, give sewing operators a line to follow so the loop is sewn in straight. Loose loop is a 38 mm tape with a loop center of about 15 to 20 mm and wide selvage edges for sewing

Are seat covers sewn or attached with adhesive-backed hook and loop?

Sewn. Seat cover makers sew woven hook and loop to the cover. Adhesive appears only as a tack-down strip that holds material in place while it is sewn.

What hook and loop is used for marine and RV upholstery?

Mushroom hook glued to the seat base is common for cushions in boats and RVs. Sewn covers use woven hook and loop.

Does Halco hook and loop meet FMVSS 302?

Yes. HALCO® Auto Mushroom Hook, Auto Mold-In Hook, Auto Loose Loop, FR Woven Hook and Loop and standard Nylon Woven Hook and Loop meet FMVSS 302. FMVSS 302 is a material flammability test; the vehicle manufacturer certifies the vehicle. Materials not bonded at every point, such as sewn fasteners, are tested on their own.

Do automotive seats need flame-retardant hook and loop?

Usually not. Halco’s standard seat trim materials meet FMVSS 302. FR hook and loop is available for programs whose specifications require it, such as some transit bus seating.

Can hook and loop be dye-matched to seat trim?

Yes, on request. Halco has matched hook and loop to OEM trim colors such as beige for leather and vinyl seats.

What widths and formats are available for seat programs?

Mushroom hook is slit to any width from 54-inch fabric; seating tape is typically 1 inch or narrower. Loose loop comes on 500-yard crosswound spools. Woven hook and loop comes in widths from 1/2″ to 7″, as rolls, cut lengths, stacked bundles or spools.

What peel and shear strength does the seat trim system provide?

HALCO® Auto Mushroom Hook mated with HALCO® Auto Loose Loop tests at 9.63 lbf per inch of peel strength (ASTM D5170) and 58.38 lb/in² of shear strength (ASTM D5169). Bond strength between the hook and the foam depends on the adhesive and foam used, so Halco recommends testing on your own materials.
